Purpose

Networking event for early and mid-career stage HRB-funded researchers:

  • to foster a sense of a HRB community amongst this group
  • to reinforce importance of communicating research to a variety of audiences and provide some guidance on how to do that
  • to create an opportunity for some people to showcase their ability
  • to provide a networking opportunity for people

09.30 am: Arrival and Registration


10.00 am: Welcome and opening – Dr Mairéad O’Driscoll, Interim Chief Executive, HRB


10.10 am: Keynote 1: Prof Jane Winters, University of London – The use of social media in an academic context.


10.40 am: Keynote 2: Dr Steve Thomas, TCD – Communicating your research to impact policy and practice


11.10 am: Your research – so what? Competition Participant 1: Nicole Campbell – How to use curry and rosemary to treat inflammation.


11.15 am: Your research – so what? Competition Participant 2: Deirdre Daly – Women’s physical and mental wellbeing in the first postpartum year; why the MAMMI study matters


11.20 am: Coffee break


11.50 am: Keynote 3: Elaine Toomey, ICE Scholar. Communicating your research to impact policy and practice


12.20 pm: Introduction to HRB Open Research, Hollydawn Murray, Publishing Editor, F1000 Platforms: HRB Open Research is a platform for rapid, author-led publication and open peer review of any research funded by the Health Research Board.


12.50 pm: Lunch break


2.00 pm: Keynote 4: HRB Research leaders: Career progression reflections. Prof Martin O’Donnell, NUI Galway, Prof Declan Devane, NUI Galway


2.30 pm: Your research – so what? Competition Participant 3: Margaret Dunne – The immune system in cancer – new pieces of the puzzle


2.35 pm: Your research – so what? Competition Participant 4: Fergal O’Shaughnessy – Life doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a Mother


2.40 pm: Ballot for audience to vote on best talk – Your research – so what?


3.00 pm: Interview – Fiona Geaney, UCC / Food Choice at Work & Fionnuala Keane, HRB-CRCI: My career journey.


3.30 pm: Open mic – questions, comments, feedback from the floor.


4.00 pm: Announce winner of “Your research – so what?” & Closing Remarks
